From February 27th to March 6th, a group of young people from Czechia, Latvia, Italy, Guadeloupe, and Sint Maarten gathered on the beautiful Caribbean island of Sint Maarten for an unforgettable Erasmus+ Youth Exchange titled “Human Rights Through Our Lens.” 🌍
Organized under the Erasmus+ programme, the project aimed to empower young people to better understand, promote, and defend human rights in their local and global communities. But beyond the workshops and discussions, the project offered something even more valuable: a genuine cultural immersion and powerful moments of connection across borders.
“Despite the heavy topic, the experience was exceptional, primarily because of the place and its exotic environment,” shared one participant. “Interviewing locals made me realize how different the awareness of human rights can be outside of Europe. I came back enriched and inspired.”
Throughout the week, participants explored key themes such as social justice, discrimination, and equality through interactive methods—ranging from role-playing and filmmaking to community engagement and interviews with locals. These activities didn’t just raise awareness; they sparked powerful conversations and meaningful reflections on how human rights are understood and practiced in different cultural contexts.
“It was a cultural shock to be 8,000 km away from home,” reflected another participant, “but this project broadened my worldview and helped me build lasting friendships across continents.”
The exchange was also a vivid celebration of diversity and cooperation. Team-building activities, film screenings, and group challenges encouraged participants to work together creatively and critically. The tropical setting of Sint Maarten provided the perfect backdrop for informal conversations and friendships that crossed geographical and cultural lines.
“This project gave us space to recognize, confront, and reflect on human rights violations—be it in our families, communities, or workplaces. It was a vibrant and collaborative experience that left us all more equipped to act.”
As part of the follow-up, participants will continue spreading what they learned in their home countries, using new tools and perspectives gained from the exchange. And as always, Cesta rozvoje is proud to support young people in stepping into global dialogue and making their voices heard.
Thank you to all participants, local partners, volunteers, and organizers who made this project a success.
